Apple unveils a new MacBook Air with M2 and a stunningly thin design

    July 11, 2022

Now customers can order the all-new MacBook Air with M2. The device features a new, strikingly thin design, a larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p HD camera, and MagSafe charging. On Friday, July 15, customers worldwide will receive the redesigned MacBook Air with M2. All-new MacBook Air features the all-new M2 chip, enhanced performance, a stunningly thin design, a larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with 1080p FaceTime HD, a four-speaker sound system, and up to 18 hours of battery life1. Starting at $1,199 (US) and $1,099 (US) for education, MacBook Air with M2 is available in four gorgeous finishes – midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray.

Apple unveils a new MacBook Air with M2 and a stunningly thin designWith a new design centered around M2, MacBook Air is remarkably thin from every angle. A durable, all-aluminum unibody enclosure delivers an astonishing 20 percent reduction in volume, measures just 11.3 millimeters thin, weighs 2.7 pounds, and measures just 11.3 millimeters thick. M2’s power efficiency allows MacBook Air to deliver all of its capabilities in a quiet, fanless design. MacBook Air now comes in two stunning new finishes: midnight and starlight, in addition to silver and space gray.

Using MagSafe, you can connect MacBook Air to a dedicated charging port while keeping it protected while charging. As well as two Thunderbolt ports, the MacBook Air has a 3.5 mm audio jack that supports high-impedance headphones. The Magic Keyboard also features an industry-leading Force Touch trackpad and a full-height function row with Touch ID.

Silver, starlight, space gray, and midnight are the four gorgeous finishes available on the newly redesigned MacBook Air. A variety of accessories can be connected to the two Thunderbolt ports of the new MacBook Air thanks to MagSafe. There is an expanded menu bar around the camera as well as the sides of the new MacBook Air’s 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. As a result, users can now view their content in vivid detail with a larger display and thinner borders. Moreover, it has a brightness of 500 nits, which is 25 percent brighter than before. Photos and movies on the MacBook Air look incredibly vibrant due to its support for 1 billion colors.

The MacBook Air features enhanced performance and all-day battery life, so users can work, play, or create just about anything – anywhere. FaceTime HD camera on MacBook Air has twice the resolution and low-light performance of previous generations. Users will look great on video calls thanks to the advanced image signal processor on M2. There are also four speakers on the MacBook Air. The speakers and mics are completely integrated between the keyboard and display so that they can fit inside such a thin design – while delivering even better audio quality. Advanced beamforming algorithms capture clean audio, while the speakers improve stereo separation and vocal clarity. Additionally, the MacBook Air supports Dolby Atmos for immersive Spatial Audio.

Users can make video calls with a new 1080p FaceTime HD camera and three-mic array, while a four-speaker sound system delivers an immersive listening experience. Apple’s M2 chip is the start of the next generation of Mac silicon, taking the breakthrough performance, power efficiency, and capabilities of M1 even further. With the world’s best-selling notebook, MacBook Air with M2, users can multitask or create captivating images with ease.

The MacBook Air with M2 has a CPU with 8 cores and a GPU with 10 cores for faster performance. The system is capable of handling workloads up to 24 GB in size and 100 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. A powerful ProRes video engine in M2 enables MacBook Air with M2 to play back 4K and 8K video streams with hardware acceleration. The M2 is nearly 40 percent faster than its predecessor2 and up to 15x faster for customers who have not upgraded to Apple silicon3.

Applying filters and effects in apps like Adobe Photoshop is up to 20 percent faster than before. This is up to 5x faster for customers who haven’t yet upgraded to Apple silicon. And even with a larger display and increased performance, MacBook Air delivers the same superior all-day battery life as before, with up to 18 hours of video playback. Only with Apple silicon can there be this combination of performance and capabilities in such a thin and light notebook in a fanless design.

M2 improves the performance of MacBook Air even further, enabling users to work with powerful apps like Final Cut Pro. The MacBook Air has a number of charging options, including a 35W compact power adapter with two USB-C ports. An optional 67W USB-C power adapter lets MacBook Air charge up to 50 percent in 30 minutes.

Users can seamlessly work across Mac and iPad with macOS Monterey’s continuity tools such as Universal Control. Spatial Audio and Portrait mode make FaceTime calls more natural and lifelike, and SharePlay lets Mac users share experiences through FaceTime. With Live Text and Visual Look Up, you can easily surface useful information, Safari helps you organize tabs with Tab Groups, and Shortcuts helps you automate routine tasks. As part of macOS Ventura, new features such as Stage Manager, Continuity Camera, and Handoff will be added to FaceTime this fall. Among other things, macOS Ventura includes major updates to Safari, Mail, Messages, and Spotlight.

The new MacBook Air uses 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all its magnets to minimize its environmental impact. Furthermore, it is the first Apple product to use certified recycled steel and 100 percent recycled aluminum in its enclosure. The MacBook Air is free of many harmful substances. It also meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency, and utilizes wood fiber from recycled sources or responsibly managed forests in its packaging. Apple is currently carbon neutral for its global operations, and by 2030, it plans to achieve net zero climate impact across its entire business, including manufacturing supply chains and all product life cycles. From design to manufacturing, every Mac Apple creates will be carbon neutral.

The all-new MacBook Air is available to order worldwide online and in the Apple Store app. It will start arriving to customers, and in select Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Resellers, beginning Friday, July 15. MacBook Air with M2, available in midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray, starts at $1,199 (US) and $1,099 (US) for education. Additional technical specifications are available at apple.com/macbook-air-m2. Additional technical specifications and details on Apple accessories – including the 30W USB-C Power Adapter for $39 (US), 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter for $59 (US), 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter for $59 (US) compatible with the World Travel Adapter Kit for $29 (US), and the 67W USB-C Power Adapter for $59 (US) – are available online.
